We have all heard about musicians and actors having agents who handle the day-to-day details so their clients can focus on what matters most. And most of us have probably wished for an agent of our own to take care of the time-consuming tasks we would rather avoid. Simple things like figuring out which subscriptions we are paying for but no longer use, or perhaps never even realized we had, and then canceling them automatically.

Welcome to 2026.

Capital markets continue to focus on the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI). The latest area drawing attention is the rise of so-called "personal AI agents" that can perform tasks on behalf of consumers. Examples include shopping, booking travel, comparing services, and managing subscriptions.

The million-dollar question - Could these technologies disrupt existing business models?

We believe AI agents will reduce friction for consumers, but any disruption is likely to be selective rather than widespread.

Businesses that benefit primarily from customer convenience or inertia, such as subscription services, price-comparison websites, and certain financial products, could face increased competition as AI tools make it easier for consumers to compare alternatives and switch providers.

On the other hand, companies with trusted brands, loyal customer bases, unique products, or superior service are likely to remain well positioned. While AI may change how consumers discover products and services, it is unlikely to diminish the importance of quality, reputation, and customer experience.

Potential areas of disruption

Online retailers and travel booking platforms could see meaningful changes in how consumers search for products and vacations. However, major purchasing decisions still involve personal preferences and human judgment. In fact, while many consumers are open to using AI to assist with complex travel planning, far fewer are comfortable allowing an AI agent to complete bookings and make payments without human approval.

Financial institutions face manageable risks as AI tools make it easier for consumers to compare savings rates, insurance policies, and other financial products. While this could increase competition, trust and personal relationships remain important factors in financial decision making, limiting the likelihood of rapid disruption.

As a result, AI is more likely to supplement existing platforms than replace them altogether.

A reminder from earlier this year

In March 2026, investors worried that advances in AI coding capabilities would dramatically disrupt software companies by making enterprise software easier to build and maintain.

Software stocks initially sold off on those concerns. However, many companies later reported strong earnings results and continued revenue growth. It serves as a useful reminder that market narratives often move much faster than business fundamentals.

Investment Outlook

At HighWater Wealth, we continue to maintain a constructive view on equities relative to fixed income. Our outlook is supported by expectations for improving economic conditions and continued AI-driven earnings growth.

We currently favor:

  • High-quality companies with durable competitive advantages
  • Value-oriented investments in select areas of the market
  • Technology and Energy sectors

At the same time, we remain more cautious on Consumer Discretionary and Real Estate due to the ongoing impact of higher interest rates and inflation pressures.

Bottom Line

Personal AI agents represent an important technological development, but the long-term winners are likely to be businesses with genuine competitive advantages rather than those that rely primarily on customer inertia.

As investors, it remains important to distinguish between compelling narratives and measurable fundamentals.

We continue to monitor these developments closely and remain focused on building diversified portfolios that can participate in long-term innovation while maintaining discipline through changing market environments.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions about your portfolio or the markets.
